Professional Examples:
Ben 10 Trailer - Familiar item: Watch reimagined as a advanced technilogical item that transforms you.
Star Wars Film Location - using a Tunisian desert to act as a desert warm planet using real film sets and houses to give the effect of an alien planet
___________________________________________________________________________________Idea 1: Alien Planet Nature Documentary
Using colour swap to create a normal looking forest to create the look of an alien planet also could use things like Blender to create the wide shot satellite image of this "Planet" or maybe even new species of creature that live on this planet
The documentary would be fiction but made out to be like it was real. It also wouldn't be too long so it would only include hi lights and wouldn't go too into detail about anything as we can't have anything longer than 3 minutes as explained in the brief.
Locations: Any forest near my house (don't know the names)
Professional examples on Miro

Idea 2: Mafia/Gangster Film Trailer In the Past / short clip from the movie
Taking an old building and putting people dressed in clothes from back then to make it look realistic and authentic.
Location: Attingham Park, Local to my house and college
Examples:
Peaky Blinders using old houses set back then for film sets
Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham after WWI, and filming in genuine old factories, warehouses, and streets giving it a cinematic historically accurate theme. The places they chose to film closely resemble what the city would have looked like back then adding to the authenticity.
Location: Shrewsbury Town
Lots of old buildings that could grab the old fashioned style
Used for lots of things including old style New York and cities set in the past with another good use of old buildings with an old fashioned style
Time authenticity: just after ww1 is when peaky blinders was filmed so probably a similar time frame to then
Professional examples on Miro

Idea 3: WWII Themed Film Trailer
I already own WWII uniforms, Vehicles and weapons so I think it would be cool to put them to use and make some interesting film with them
Examples of what I could work with:
Don't think anything D-day related wouldnt be possible as there is no local beach I could use and it would require a very high budget with a lot of equipment that I don't currently own, so most likely a laid back in the country side calmer approach would be a lot more possible.
Locations: Country roads in Shropshire, Open fields, old buildings in Shrewsbury
Captain America could be linked to the Harley Davidson and could make room for good backstory and flashbacks.

Blender Test for Planet Documentary:
Helpful links I used to learn:
(couldn't copy link to blogger)
tried making a satellite image scene for the documentary in blender but with the long tutorials and messing around it became quite time consuming and something I should put time to when I have a decided final idea after sharing feedback with other people in my class
___________________________________________________________________________________Testing image effects for old fashioned style.
Picture of a random old building transforming it into a faded, less contrasting and duller clip. I did this in after effects so If I get to actually using real footage then I know exactly what I have to work with so I can edit familiarly.
To:
Creating that moody dull old style effect with just messing with a few hue and saturation, brightness and contrast settings

Sony Camera Settings Test:
ISO 800
FPS 25p
File Format XAVC S HD
Shutter Speed 1/50
Manual Exposure
Cine vlog:
Fresh Ocean
Fresh Forest
Picture Profiles
PP5
Creative Look:
I filmed 10 second long clips for each and took a freeze frame out of each of them and uploaded them to my blog.

Fps comparison test:
Video is bugged I'm not sure what's wrong with it it randomly slows down midway through and there isn't a lot I can do about it because there is some separate slider I have to mess with that controls the speed for some reason
Films in UK cinemas are predominantly filmed and displayed at 24 frames a second
(fps). While 25fps is the standard for television broadcast in the UK, the cinema industry globally adheres to 24fps as the standard, which provides the traditional "cinematic" look.
a natural, slightly dreamlike motion blur that mimics how the human eye perceives movement
The "cinematic look" of 24 frames per second (fps) is defined by
, creating a 100-year-old industry standard associated with "movie magic". It provides a 180° shutter effect (typically 1/48th of a second shutter speed) that feels less artificial than the smoother, hyper-realistic 60 fps.
Not too sure why the teslas rear lights are flickering I do believe it is to do with a match with the shutter speed I was filming in causing the flickering effect shown in the video

Recording in S-Log and importing LUT files into my media. I decided to experiment with S-log files which is an inbuilt feature that is apart of some of the cameras that are provided to us by the college
What is S-log?
"S-Log is a log curve which has been specially optimised for digital motion picture cameras to maximise the performance of the image sensor.
Cinematographers shooting in the current REC.709 standard have to choose whether to sacrifice detail in the highlights or the shadows. S-Log allows you to retain all of this information."
- Official Sony website
My understanding of what s-log does and how it benefits me: I believe you can create very cinematic professional quality pieces of media because with s-log it enables you to capture as much image information as possible so that in post you have full freedom to edit the colour however you want using whatever LUT files you want.
What is a LUT file?
"A Look Up Table (LUT) is a term used to describe the transformation of color values to your desired output values, or final footage. As a preset color setting for your video footage, LUTs provide:
- A predetermined look for specific visual needs.
- Decreases the time needed to color grade in post-production.
- Reference points to develop unique filming styles.
Since LUTs can be directly applied to your footage, this makes the grading process much faster and specific LUTs can transform footage to look like your favorite films and shows. Refer to the article for more details."
- Official Sony website
These are some examples of LUT files I imbedded into some media I filmed outside of college using S-log
How I imbedded and located the LUT files into my media
The main source of where you can find all these public LUTs (Look Up Tables) is on the official Sony website after you log in you can access a lot of creator made official look up tables that they have made themselves
After you manage to navigate your way to the LUT gallery It tells you some useful information about how to use them and what they are used for which can be quite interesting to look at
Importing LUT files into your media In premier pro:
First you need to download the desired LUTs that you want to experiment with on your clips then load up your editing software
Once you have loaded up your clips to your timeline select the clip you want to imbed the LUT file and click on the clip on your timeline that you want to put the LUT file on
Then after that you need to go to the right to the properties tab and select the lumetri colour option
Inside this option navigate your way to the basic correction and you are given the option to browse your computer to find your LUT files after you have downloaded and picked out one suitable for your video style and easily imbed them into your media.

I have decided to go with the peaky blinders trailer as my main idea that I'm going to pitch and prepare for as I have a basic understanding of WWII as it is an old interest of mine. Also I am looking forward to filming and preparing for it. I have already started planning for the trailer on my Miro. a lot of my pre production planning are n there and hopefully soon some post production.
Another big reason I have gone forward with the peaky blinders idea is that I have a social connection with someone that works in the costume department on a lot of films and I went to his storage warehouse where he has all of his left over costume and gear from previous jobs he's been employed on and I went to have a look at some of his peaky blinders related clothing and he actually had a lot of stuff from Steven knights official tailer company "Garrison tailors" the garrison was a big part of the peaky blinders series as it was the bar that was owned by the peaky blinders. and I believe that was what influenced the name, and I was lucky to have been lent every thing I need and more clothing wise to help the authenticity of this idea go through well which is a big part in making a film that's meant to be from 80 years ago. with the smallest sign of something modern potentially ruining the feel of the entire production

ReplyDeleteA good start Alex but can you expand on a few points? I'd like to know your thoughts and decisions about the examples you looked at - have they inspired ideas? If so what? Also the testing you have done, what do you think about that? Has it made you reach any conclusions about anything? Try and explain. I'd also like to see you add your ideas , peer feedback and pitch onto your blog too. Maybe make a new post for these before you start your planning.
ReplyDeleteRemember your blog should record your progress throughout your project and note your decision making. Revisit the resources on Teams to refresh your memory if you get stuck or ask a tutor.
